Can the world sustain our increasing dependence on electricity?

When you enter a departmental store the door opens automatically and once you are in, it closes automatically. When you get back to your home late at night, the bulb glows automatically. Water taps didn't require electricity to work until recently when the sensors replaced the manual job. Many physical tasks have been ascribed to electric machines. These kinds of automations are increasing along with the advancement of technology. The electricity, which powers these devices, has never been so much useful and demanding. However, can our world sustain this increasing dependence of ours on electricity?

The dominant source of energy at present is the fossil fuel which is non-renewable source of energy. It is currently being used to generate electricity to meet our needs. Unfortunately, this source of energy is depleting. Although many reserves of fossil fuels are yet to be explored, they will be finished someday. This creates doubts upon the world’s ability to sustain our increasing reliance on electricity, at the current pace, with the limited resources available in the Earth.

However, many countries have huge potentials to generate hydro-electricity, one of the alternatives to fossil fuels. For instance, Nepal has the potential to generate 83,000 Megawatt of electricity, out of which only 1% has been actually generated. Many other countries have such potentials in the hydro-sector, especially the underdeveloped and developing nations. If such resources are utilized properly and fully then our growing needs of electricity can be fulfilled to a large extent.

Many researches are in progress to harness the energy from the sun and the wind. Solar energy and wind energy are not only clean sources but also perpetual sources of energy. If new innovations pave way to harness these forms of energy with a greater efficiency and store them than those of the existing technologies our growing needs of electricity can be easily met. There will be no need to worry about energy crisis.

Similarly, researches are also taking place to harness nuclear energy. Nuclear plants are the most reliable sources of energy which provide constant supply of electricity. Moreover, this is the area which is still in the infancy stage and needs much more exploration. Many breakthrough innovations are probable in this sector. Hence, with newer studies, researches and innovations this source can contribute generously to meet future demands of electricity, making the energy generation sustainable.

Even though the electricity generation stagnates, the electric and electronic devices are being more energy efficient slowly and gradually, thus requiring less electricity to operate. The technological developments have always reduced, and will continue to reduce, the consumption of electricity by the devices. Thus, even with the same electrical power, more electrical devices will be able to operate. This phenomenon will become more significant along with the pace of technological advancement and will somehow enable the world to sustain our growing reliance on electrical energy.

Energy demand is increasing day by day. Our life is full of devices and equipment which operate on electricity. Moreover, newer electric devices are being developed and many manual tasks are being automated. All these developments will be relying upon the supply of electricity and thus the dependence upon electricity will increase undoubtedly. However, mechanization and automation has allowed man to be more creative as well. People are nowadays focusing more upon research by automating other routine tasks. As a result, their power to innovate is increasing. I strongly believe that the world will find ways to sustain our increasing dependence on electricity.
